Changing Team Culture: Building a More Inclusive Workplace

This post reflects on recently facilitating a series of workshops with a long-established team following complaints about workplace banter and behaviours. Recognising that deeply ingrained attitudes and established team dynamics would present challenges, I designed the workshops to encourage open discussion in small groups, allowing every participant the opportunity to share their views.

Through facilitated conversations and thought-provoking exercises, participants explored why they held certain beliefs and how differing perspectives can influence workplace relationships. Revisiting equality, diversity and inclusion principles, alongside the legal responsibilities under the Equality Act, helped many delegates recognise that behaviours they had previously considered acceptable could have serious consequences in the workplace.

The experience reinforced the importance of strong leadership in creating an inclusive culture. This also recognised that every team member shares responsibility for promoting respect and challenging inappropriate behaviour. Following the positive impact of the workshops, I plan to develop the programme further for future clients.
